ECUADOR: Congress fights against disbandment

Congress is fighting a rear-guard action against President Rafael Correa's efforts to dissolve it. Correa wants congress to be replaced with a legislative commission to run alongside the constituent assembly. In the wake of the comprehensive victory for Correa's Acuerdo Paí­s in the elections for the assembly on 30 September, congress adopted a resolution last week in which it promised to conduct an international campaign to defend itself. Legislators said they would go to the Organization of American States (OAS), the UN and other world parliaments to seek support for their cause.
