MEXICO: Mexico to get US$500m a year from US

Carlos Rico, the deputy foreign minister responsible for relations with the US, said on 4 October, that the US would provide US$1bn in military aid over the next two years. Rico said that the money would be contained in supplementary budget authorisations due to go the US congress. The US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, speaking in Bogotá, Colombia, confirmed on 3 October that the US was working on a Plan México, along the lines of the controversial Plan Colombia, which has funded the Colombian government's offensives against the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc).
