The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) won the three
gubernatorial elections in the Estado de México, Coahuila and Nayarit on 3 July.
Although it lost some ground in Hidalgo, which held municipal elections on the
same day, this was barely noticeable as the PRI won the most important races in
the state. The striking thing about the elections in the Estado, the country's
most populous and richest state, is that although the turnout was much the same
as in the previous gubernatorial election in 2005 (at 43%), the PRI's vote
jumped by 1m to 2.8m. A lot of these extra votes came from the Partido
Acción Nacional (PAN), which saw its support almost halve compared with 2005,
but the PRI also seems to have appealed more to first time voters (this year
there were 10.5m voters compared with 8.8m in 2005) than the other two
parties. End of preview - This article contains approximately 837 words.
