Less than three weeks after the tobacco giant Philip Morris took Uruguay to court for harming its business interests through tough anti-smoking laws, two more countries in the region have banned smoking in all public places and its advertising. Argentina's president, Cristina Fernández, signed a decree banning smoking in enclosed spaces, bars, sport stadiums or social clubs. Fernández adroitly used the new law to enhance her prospects of re-election: she confirmed, unsurprisingly, on 21 June that she would seek a second term in office in October.
