PARAGUAY : Re-election ruckus triggers reshuffle

Politics in Paraguay could be about to turn ugly. President Fernando Lugo fired two senior cabinet ministers on 17 June. This was no run-of-the-mill cabinet reshuffle. Lugo obliquely accused both men of elevating presidential ambitions above their daily jobs. The next elections might not be due until April 2013 but they have been brought sharply into focus in recent weeks by a proposal from the Frente Guasú, the umbrella left-wing coalition that backs Lugo, to push for a referendum on re-election.
