Brazil's Green party (Partido Verde, PV) seems to be falling asunder, despite a respectable performance by its presidential candidate (and former environment minister) Marina Silva in the October 2010 elections. Silva polled a decent 19.6m votes in the first round (taking 20% of the vote), stealing ballots from both of her rivals and pushing the contest into a second round run-off between Dilma Rousseff and José Serra. However, the party fared weakly at the congressional level, losing its only senator. The timing of the PV's internal implosion is unfortunate. The environment is a hot topic at the moment, amid rising deforestation and worsening violence in the Amazon, as well as intense controversy over the federal government's support for the giant Belo Monte dam.End of preview - This article contains approximately 766 words.
