ECUADOR: Full speed ahead

President Rafael Correa wasted little time in reacting to the narrow margin of victory of his referendum on 7 May. The main scapegoat was his interior minister, Alfredo Vera. There may yet be further cabinet casualties but Correa has calculated that his best strategy is simply to ignore the close result and proceed with implementing the referendum's proposals as if it were the resounding victory he had predicted. The government is preparing to carry out an "information campaign" in the provinces that rejected the referendum proposals in a bid to dismantle the "rumours and lies" put out by the opposition and to persuade people that they should have voted "yes".
