PERU: Humala demands VV day over Sendero

President Ollanta Humala threw out a challenge to the armed forces and the police this week to come up with a date for victory over Sendero Luminoso guerrillas in their main stronghold, the Vrae (Apurímac and Ene river valleys). In an address to the top brass Humala promised more resources to defeat the guerrillas but conditioned these on results. Humala, who himself fought against Sendero as an army officer in 1992, called for a radical change in strategy with tangible results against the forces of Víctor Quispe Palomino, “camarada José”, the guerrilla leader in the Vrae.
