COLOMBIA: Guerrilla actions spoil Santos’ anniversary

President Juan Manuel Santos will have read many statistics since coming to power exactly one year ago, most of which will have made pleasant reading, especially those related to his approval rating, which is hovering around 80%. But one statistic is alarming. Alfredo Rangel, director of the NGO Seguridad y Democracia, claimed last week that guerrilla actions against the energy sector had increased by 90% in the first half of 2011 compared with the same period last year. These are the same guerrilla groups that the armed forces were confidently talking about wiping off the face of the map 18 months ago. Santos reacted by announcing a new five-pronged strategy to combat the country’s guerrillas.
