VENEZUELA: Mentor severs ties with Chávez

Heinz Dieterich, a German-born professor in Mexico and the architect of 21st Century Socialism, has publicly broken with President Hugo Chávez. Dieterich, who recently slammed the Venezuelan government’s poor communication about Chávez’s illness in an article entitled ‘Cancer’ and the resurrection of Hugo Chávez [WR-11-26], said it was a process of gradual disillusionment, dating back to 2005. Chávez has lost mentors before, notably Luis Miquilena during his first term in power, without adverse effects, although Dieterich is the second prominent intellectual supporter to criticise him in recent weeks, following Noam Chomsky.
