BOLIVIA: Morales wrestles with indigenous rights

Just over two decades since the 1990 ‘March for Dignity’ against neo-liberalism which launched Bolivia’s modern indigenous movement, the same groups are now making the same journey of more than 400km from Beni in the east to La Paz to demand respect for their territory. This time, however, the cause of discontent is an initiative of the government of indigenous President Evo Morales – the proposal, to build a road through the indigenous territory and national park, Isiboro Sécure (Tipnis) [WR-11-30].
