The US frets, but sends out mixed messages

On 13 September sections of the US political establishment sent different but distinct warning messages to Mexico. The messages arrived as the new US ambassador, Earl Anthony Wayne, presented his credentials to President Felipe Calderón. What added point to the warnings was a supportive statement the day before from President Barack Obama, which committed the US against the idea that a Mexican government should call a truce in its war against the country’s drug gangs.
