ARGENTINA: History in the making

Cristina Fernández is set to make history anew. In 2007, she became the first popularly elected female president of Argentina and on 23 October she is all but certain to become the first female president to secure re-election. It remains to be seen if Fernández will pass the historic 62% re-election mark set by Colonel Juan Domingo Perón (1946-1955 & 1973-1974) and Carlos Saúl Menem (1989-1999). Remarkably, of the four Argentine presidents re-elected to date, only one was not a member of the Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) - Hipólito Yrigoyen (1916-1922 & 1928-1930) - who was one of the co-founders of Argentina’s second largest political party, Unión Cívica Radical (UCR).
