CUBA: Dying on its feet

In contrast to many parts of Latin America, where countries like Brazil are booming on the back of young consumers eager for a slice of global capitalism, Cuba is aging very rapidly. The 85 year-old former president Fidel Castro (1959-1998) seems to be enjoying his retirement, spending his days meeting visiting global dignitaries and penning articles about the state of the world. Not so his socialist revolutionary supporters, who struggle to get by on a monthly pension of just US$10 (250 Cuban pesos).  As one pensioner quipped, that’s an average tip in some Havana hotels.
