It is not often that a Dominican President gets the opportunity to win
international acclaim, but President Leonel Fernández seized it while hosting
the Rio Group Summit in Santo Domingo. He achieved what had appeared unthinkable
when the summit began: the hugs and handshakes of the heads of state of
Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. His tactful display will have done his
re-election bid no harm at all. Last week a poll showed that with less than two
months to go before presidential elections on 16 May, he remains on track to win
