MEXICO: Vázquez Mota gets closer

Josefina Vázquez Mota is tantalisingly close to winning the presidential nomination for the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). If she wins the nomination, almost certainly she, rather than the left-wing candidate for the presidency, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will be the beneficiary of any slip-ups by Enrique Peña Nieto, the de facto candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) and the overwhelming frontrunner in the opinion polls. What makes Vázquez Mota’s position so delicate is that she is embarrassing President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, who has made it clear that he would prefer Ernesto Cordero, his former finance minister, to be the PAN’s candidate in the 1 July presidential election.
