Mexican traffickers, led by the Sinaloa/Pacífico cartel, are being credited with having become the source of 80% of the methamphetamine consumed in the US (as was said of the Amezcua Contreras cartel back in 1980). The evidence certainly points to an abundant inflow of precursor chemicals into Mexico and of the drug into the US, as well as a spread of meth production into Guatemala. Easier to hide, far less bulky and much more profitable than cannabis, meth production has recovered from the slump caused in 2007-08 by curbs on imports of precursor chemicals imposed by the US and Mexico.
