GUATEMALA: Pérez Molina launches new anticrime strategy

President Otto Pérez Molina’s investiture was preceded by the boast, by the outgoing government of Alvaro Colom (2008-2012), that it had managed to reduce violent crime. Since taking office on 14 January, Pérez Molina has begun implementing a new strategy based on the deployment of inter-agency task forces, backed up by civilian and military intelligence. He has also revealed unexpected openness to the notion of decriminalising drugs.
