EL SALVADOR | Homicide rate decline halts. The national police (PNC) reports that homicides in 2011 rose to 4,308, or 2% more than in 2010. The country’s rate per 100,000 inhabitants reported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) (on the strength of PNC data) had fallen from a 10-year peak of 70.9 in 2009 to 66 in 2010. The PNC also reported that it had arrested 52,000 suspected criminals in 2011.
