If the government of President Hugo Chávez has an exposed flank for the opposition to assault ahead of October’s presidential elections it is public security. Chávez is working hard to repel the opposition sallies. The government has been reticent about announcing homicide figures in the past, but the interior minister, Tareck El Aissami, revealed this week that there were 1,347 murders and 37 kidnappings in Venezuela in January and that he would release monthly figures from now on. He also gave figures for some individual states. This had a clear electoral motive. El Aissami took aim at the favourites to win the primary elections on 12 February for the opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), Henrique Capriles Radonski and Pablo Pérez, arguing that they had a poor record on public security as they governed the most violent states.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1323 words.
