VENEZEULA: Chávez tries to avert fresh media controversy

The minister of information and communications, Andrés Izarra, resigned this week after less than a year in the job. Izarra said he had decided to step down after having agreed to charge private television stations for the right to retransmit official images, such as government speeches, from the state-owned broadcaster Venezolana de Televisión (VTV). He said he made an error of judgement by not consulting President Hugo Chávez beforehand.
