Farming unions declared a third strike on 27 May after the government
accused them of an “anti-democratic attack with coup overtones." The tough
rhetoric came from the Partido Justicialista (PJ) in its new incarnation under
former president Néstor Kirchner as a bulwark of support for the government. It
came in response to a public event organised by the farming unions in Rosario on
25 May. The biggest mobilisation against a government since the restoration of
democracy in 1983, it completely upstaged a parallel event held by President
