Energy and education will be the priorities of President Michelle
Bachelet's administration over the course of the next year. In the longest so
far of her three annual state-of-the-nation addresses to congress, Bachelet
placed the emphasis on the need to embrace alternative energy sources to reduce
Chile's dependence on imported supplies. She also said that 2008 should be the
“year of education" and called on congress to agree on an education reform bill.
Students were unconvinced. They organised a national protest on 28
