The opposition right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) was the undisputed winner; the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberaciόn Nacional (FMLN), the clear loser. That is the simple reading of the congressional and municipal elections on 11 March: Arena is once again the largest party in congress and it thumped the FMLN in the mayoralty of San Salvador, the most important elected post after the presidency. President Mauricio Funes should be no worse for the result as there was no significant change in the balance of power in congress. The big worry for the FMLN is that it lost a lot of ground to Arena in the municipal elections, which provide the most accurate gauge of how the presidential vote goes. It will need to engage in considerable soul-searching ahead of presidential elections in 2014. End of preview - This article contains approximately 1340 words.
