“A society will only be democratic if the process of its construction is democratic." With these words the president of the constituent assembly, Alberto Acosta, resigned this week because of irreconcilable differences with the leadership of the majority party, Acuerdo País (AP), and by extension President Rafael Correa, over the need to meet the deadline of 26 July for drafting the constitution. Implicit in his resignation speech was that he had been sacrificed because he tried to imbue the process with too much democracy by allowing free (and at times long and slow) debate. He implied that the AP leadership was guided by expediency rather than principle.
