Just two weeks after Argentina made international headlines with its decision to re-nationalise the oil company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF), the local subsidiary of Spain’s Repsol, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales set off more investor jitters with his 1 May decree ordering the takeover of Bolivia’s electricity transmission company, Transportadora de Electricidad (TDE), seizing control from Red Eléctrica Internacional SAU, a subsidiary of Spain’s Red Eléctrica Española (REE). Morales pledged to strengthen state control over the economy under his new 2009 plurinational constitution.
