With the frontrunner Enrique Peña Nieto conspicuous by his absence and his closest rival Andrés Manuel López Obrador unconvincing, the performance of Josefina Vázquez Mota and, significantly, the third man, Gabriel Quadri, stood out. Watched by an estimated 100,000 people, the debate will not have any great influence on the election result on 1 July but polls are putting Quadri on as much as 4% of the vote, more than the difference between López Obrador and Vázquez Mota, who are currently vying to establish a clear lead in second place.
