TRACKING TRENDS

EL SALVADOR | Setback for FMLN. President Mauricio Funes has appointed a close adviser, Hato Hasbún, as his new education minister to replace Vice-President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, who stepped down from the position in advance of his pursuit of the presidency in 2014. Hasbún, a key powerbroker in the Funes administration, will retain his position as the current secretary of strategic issues. The appointment is a setback for the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberaciόn Nacional (FMLN) which loses further presence in the cabinet. The bigger setback for the FMLN, however, will come if it is forced to backtrack in its fierce struggle with the constitutional chamber of the supreme court (CSJ) over the appointment of magistrates to the body.
