ECUADOR: Fraud charges add spice to electoral process

“A monstrous fraud.” That is how President Rafael Correa described the presentation of signatures to the national electoral council (CNE) to register political parties ahead of elections in February 2013. Correa, who is yet to confirm whether he will seek re-election, accused opposition political parties of falsifying signatures en masse. They, in turn, accused him of seeking to eliminate them from the electoral process.
