Miners working for the state copper giant Codelco staged their first general strike since 1993 on 11 July. The strike took place on a symbolic day: 40 years since the approval, by the Socialist government of Salvador Allende, of a law nationalising the copper industry and establishing Codelco. Virtually the entire workforce - 15,000 permanent employees and 30,000 sub-contractors - participated in the strike, which was organised by the Federación de Trabajadores del Cobre (FTC) union. The strike comes as the government of President Sebastián Piñera is struggling to contend with major protests by students against higher education reform (again over privatisation fears) and the construction of a mega hydroelectric dam in Patagonia, HidroAysén.End of preview - This article contains approximately 589 words.
