Colombians were battered by good and bad news this week, sending them on an emotional rollercoaster. The kidnapping of a British and Australian tourist in a national park in neighbouring Ecuador by a (yet unidentified) Colombian criminal group, and their subsequent release provided the first bad and good news over the past weekend. This was followed by President Juan Manuel Santos’s announcement that he would undergo surgery to remove a cancerous tumour, undoubtedly bad news as the peace negotiations with the Fuerzas Armadas de Colombia (Farc) are just around the corner. But this was counteracted by yet another blow to narco trafficking with the capture of ‘Alitas’ (Jesús David Echeverry Trujillo).
