In 2009 there were 42; in 2013 there will be 11. The sharp fall in the number of political parties registered to compete in the presidential and legislative elections on 17 February next year, in a country where new political parties once proliferated, owed primarily to the fact that the national electoral council (CNE) disqualified more parties than it registered. Despite the pre-eminence of President Rafael Correa, Ecuador remains a long way from the status quo in Venezuela, where disparate opposition parties have for several years now formed a single coalition of convenience to try and defeat President Hugo Chávez.
