MEXICO: Peña Nieto and Obama to freshen things up

Three big issues inevitably dominated the agenda when President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto met US President Barack Obama on 27 November -security, immigration and trade. Without diminishing its importance, Peña Nieto sought to shift some of the intense focus off the fight against drug-trafficking and organised crime and on to job creation and deepening integration and economic, trade and energy cooperation within Nafta. Obama, meanwhile, expressed his commitment to pursuing immigration reform – and for once his words did not sound hollow.
