CHILE: Pinochet still casts shadow over electoral politics
President Michelle Bachelet addressed a crowd of
just 5,000 people in the national stadium in Santiago to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the plebiscite on whether General Augusto Pinochet should remain
in power. The Right was quick to mock the low turnout. It said that taken with
the failure of the ruling Concertación to agree on a single slate of candidates
in the municipal elections on 26 October, it was clear evidence that the leftist
coalition, which has held power since Pinochet, was on the way out.
