NICARAGUA: Managua mayoral contest kicks off

With the municipal elections four weeks away, the contest for the most important political position after the presidency, the Managua mayoralty is hotting up with the main contenders for the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) and opposition Alianza Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) both kicking off their campaigns this week. The electoral battle has transformed into a vote on the national government of President Daniel Ortega, rather than focusing on local issues, adding to an increasingly polarised political climate.
