GUATEMALA: Portillo extradited and released on bail

Former president Alfonso Portillo (2000-2004) has handed himself into the Mexican authorities to be extradited and tried for corruption in Guatemala. Within hours of his return, a judge released him on bail of US$132,000, a move which has already provoked an outcry, with critics warning that his trial is likely to make a mockery of the judicial system.
