Internal contradictions in the left-wing opposition Frente Farabundo
Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) are conspiring against the party's
candidate Mauricio Funes winning the presidential elections in March and
breaking the monopoly on power of the right-wing Alianza Republicana
Nacionalista (Arena). While Funes is spreading the message that he would retain
the US dollar if he wins the elections, senior members of the FMLN are
undermining him by claiming that the party is considering bringing back the
colon. Arena's candidate Rodrigo Avila has pounced on the inconsistency, which
could help him close the already narrowing gap on Funes in the
