What goes up must come down. President Juan Manuel Santos’s stellar approval ratings since taking office in August 2010 are no exception to the rule, according to two polls published last week. However, the government has taken some measures that would be expected to play positively with the public since they are in tune with several of the positions adopted by those consulted by the polls. Given that the polls simply could not serve as a thermometer of the impact of these latest decisions because they were conducted prior to the government announcing them, the government’s latest moves could send him back on the up by early 2013. It remains to be seen whether this rebound will be enough to propel him to a second term in 2014.
