HONDURAS: Zelaya’s wife tops early polls

Events in Honduras are hurtling along at breakneck speed ahead of November’s general election. It is not implausible to argue that José Orlando Hernández, the president of congress and the ruling Partido Nacional’s 2013 presidential candidate, is pushing through the foundations for further big constitutional changes once in office. He has to get there first, however, and that is by no means a given. According to the first big national pre-electoral poll of the year, Xiomara Castro, wife of the ousted former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009), is narrowly leading Hernández by 25% to 23%.
