REGION: Region forced to wake up and smell the coffee

Experts are describing an outbreak of roya, a fungus affecting coffee, the region’s biggest export, as the worst ever to hit Central America and Mexico. With projected losses of between 20% and 30% for the 2012-13 harvest, governments have begun wheeling out measures in response. Attributed to a combination of high temperatures and rainfall, the spread of the disease once again illustrates Central America’s particular vulnerability to climate change.
