VENEZUELA: Insults fly across the national assembly

The opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) said this week’s “cowardly attacks” by the national assembly president Diosdado Cabello on MUD legislators amounted to “fascism in its purest form”. The MUD’s defeated 2012 presidential candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski said that Cabello and the ruling Partido Unido Socialista de Venezuela (PSUV) were bent on “criminalising the opposition” and demoralising its supporters. Observers agreed that these increasingly vicious attacks between the two sides may be a foretaste of a bitter and dirty campaign ahead of a possible new presidential election this year.
