ECUADOR: Judicial vacuum threatens rule of law

President Rafael Correa warned this week that Ecuador did not currently live under the rule of law because of the “chaos" in the judicial system. His comments came after supreme court judges refused to participate in the selection process for the new national court of justice (CNJ), which is replacing the supreme court (CSJ). This led to the incongruous sight of a President calling on the people to stage a hunger strike to resolve the judicial deadlock.
