A federal police investigation carried out with the support of the
intelligence services (Abin), which led to the very public arrest of banker
Daniel Dantas in July, has split opinion in Brazil. The case has opened up a
debate over how far the ossified Brazilian constitution should be stretched to
allow the punishment of white-collar corruption. For the most cynical, however,
the controversy has only served as a smokescreen to hide the obscure interests
that led to the R$12bn (US$5.1bn) takeover of Brasil Telecom, once controlled by
Dantas. As discussions over the legality of the investigations take place in the
supreme court (and the press), the regulator has approved the takeover - with
backing from the Lula administration. End of preview - This article contains approximately 1278 words.
