President Rafael Correa presented his state-of-the-nation address on
15 January, marking his second anniversary in power, against a backdrop of
social unrest. While Correa's personal popularity, and the lack of any credible
challenger, should secure him re-election on 26 April, his Acuerdo País party
might not sweep the legislative elections. The challenge is coming not from the
Right, which Correa has so skilfully discredited, but from the Left, which has
found common cause against the “neoliberal" mining law approved by
