ARGENTINA: Cuban visit smacks of megaphone diplomacy

President Cristina Fernández travelled to Havana this week for talks with her Cuban counterpart Raúl Castro. The visit, the first by an Argentine head of state since Raúl Alfonsí­n in 1986, coincided with the inauguration of Barack Obama as US president on 20 January. As such, it had a symbolic resonance: it underlined Argentina's commitment to rehabilitate Cuba fully into the region while pressuring Obama to accelerate the revision of US relations with Cuba. By adopting this combative diplomacy, Fernández runs the risk of missing out on the domestic political advantages that reaching out to Obama would afford.
