ECUADOR | Chevron case continues to make waves. On 2 July a judge from a provincial court in Ecuador’s Amazonian Sucumbíos province ordered the seizure of US$96.35m owed by the Ecuadorean State to US oil firm, Chevron, and determined that the amount should be used to pay part of the US$19bn that Chevron has been ordered to pay to local inhabitants in compensation for the environmental damage caused by the firm’s local subsidiary’s operations between 1972 and 1990.
