Women’s minister resigns. On 31 July Maureen Clarke, Costa Rica’s women’s minister and president of the national women’s institute (Inamu), announced her resignation in order to join the presidential campaign of the former San José mayor, Johnny Araya (1998-2013), who is running for the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) in the 2 February 2014 election. The government of President Laura Chinchilla has yet to name a replacement for Clarke, whose decision came as a “big surprise” to President Chinchilla, according to communications minister, Carlos Roverssi.
