BRAZIL: Patriota warns UK over Miranda detention

Brazil’s foreign minister, Antonio Patriota, is getting used to chiding his anglophone allies. Last week, the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, was warned of the risk of “casting a shadow of distrust” over bilateral relations following the revelations of the activities of the National Security Agency (NSA). This week, following the detention of the Brazilian citizen David Miranda, Patriota told the UK’s foreign secretary, William Hague, that this “type of intimidatory action…has no place in a good relationship”. Yet there is so far little indication that he is prepared to take more concrete action against either country.
