President Cristina Fernández sent a bill to
congress this week to move mid-term congressional elections forward by four
months to 28 June on the pretext that a protracted electoral cycle is
inappropriate while Argentina faces serious economic challenges. It marks an
audacious, and shrewd, bid by the government to deprive the opposition of time
to consolidate alliances, and ensure that it cannot build up momentum in
provincial elections in the months leading up to the congressional elections.
Fernández is also calculating that the full impact of the country's economic
difficulties will not be as apparent in June as they would be by
October.
