ARGENTINA: Fernández tries to tinker with elections

President Cristina Fernández sent a bill to congress this week to move mid-term congressional elections forward by four months to 28 June on the pretext that a protracted electoral cycle is inappropriate while Argentina faces serious economic challenges. It marks an audacious, and shrewd, bid by the government to deprive the opposition of time to consolidate alliances, and ensure that it cannot build up momentum in provincial elections in the months leading up to the congressional elections. Fernández is also calculating that the full impact of the country's economic difficulties will not be as apparent in June as they would be by October.
